Chakaharta

About

chaka_muir

In the midst of preparations for a gig with downtempo improv group Nuco back in 2003, I got a phone call from band-mate Frank Topp:  “So what time does ‘Chakaharta’ or whatever it’s called start tonight?”

He’d managed to mangle the name of the party we were playing at — Anahata – into a bastardized version of its literal translation, “heart chakra”.  Since Frank had a penchant for lifting song names from other bands without telling us, I thought it would be entirely fitting to use Chakaharta as my own alias.

Dry Record-Label Bio

I began releasing tech house under the moniker Chakaharta in 2003, starting with a pair of b-side tracks on vinyl trademark Fair Park recordings.  A string of releases on Texas label Harmonious Discord has chronicled a wide range of sounds.

As a DJ growing up in the house-heavy 90s underground scene in Dallas, I learned the importance of long mixes, smooth blends, and psychedelic beats.

Other projects have included working with the aforementioned Texas-based downtemo improv collective Nuco on a series of evening-long jam concerts in 2001–2004, traditional West African Djembe as part of the Malian drum ensemble Fato, techno tracks with Harmonious Discord label head Sean Anderson as part of The Immaculate Bachelors, and work on an unreleased ambient dub album as Paging Ms. Toit with Clay Roper and Jamie Cameron.
